Davis, who earlier Saturday was named The Associated Press's college basketball player of the year, scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the top-ranked Wildcats advance to the title game on Monday, where they will play the winner of Saturday night's game between Ohio State and Kansas.

Jeremy Lin's basketball season has come to an abrupt and untimely end, because of a knee injury that will require surgery.

Lin, the Knicks' point guard, has a small, chronic meniscal tear in his left knee, the Knicks announced Saturday night. He will undergo arthroscopic surgery and is expected to miss six weeks, wiping out the rest of the regular season and possibly the first round of the playoffs, assuming the Knicks make it.

The Future of Article Marketing - An Interview - Website Promotion - Online Promotion

Question: I stumbled across your site by accident one day when I was approving articles on a list I owned. That's how I found you. Tell me how you got started in article writing and promotion.

Answer: Content is the foundation of any internet marketing campaign. No matter what you choose to do, whether it's hard-core SEO, Google AdWords, search enging marketing, email marketing, or any other form of online marketing - the web is fundamentally built around content.

Creating and providing content to the literally millions of content sites and newsletters just seemed to be a smart move. Did you know that there are now more websites on the net than there are people on the planet? The webmasters of those sites simply don't have time to create the sheer volume of content they need to fill their newsletters.

I started sending articles to people who wanted content, and I was amazed at the results. More targeted traffic started showing up at my various sites. With more targeted traffic comes greater conversion - which means more people to opt-in to my lists, more affiliates join my programs, and more sales of my products and services.

The problem was I was spending too much time submitting articles by hand. I knew there had to be a better way. There were services to do article submission - some charging up to $400 per article! - and there was software to download and install - but I was still chained to my desk to do the actual submission work.

My consulting work with small business owners had taught me that what the market needed was a low-cost, automated, hands-free solution. I set out to build a service that would alleviate all of the problems that I'd seen with article marketing: either time-consuming and tedious drudgework or high expense for the author, while being spam-ridden for the newsletter editors and content site owners.

I put together a team and we created completely automated submission, free article review to help each author get better results, and a team human-spam-blockers who make sure that spam never goes through our servers. Article submission is affordable to small business owners through a unique subscription model that allows an author to submit an unlimited number of articles without having to factor in the expense of each and every article.

Question: What changes have you seen in article writing and promotion since you started your service?

Answer: The article marketing landscape is constantly changing. Some once very popular article sites have completely vanished, overwhelmed by spam and the sheer volume of new articles being submitted. At the same time, new sites come online all the time. Keeping up with these changes is almost a full time job.

As people started understanding that they could get one-way (as opposed to reciprocal) links, better search engine placement, improved pagerank, more traffic and sales just from writing articles, we've seen the inevitable entry of spammers into the market. These are people who are not interested in providing good content, but only want a free link in someone's newsletter.

The result is that the article directories and content site owners are putting more restrictions on the articles they'll accept. While in the early days we could submit short (150-250 word) articles, these days if an article isn't at least 400 words, it's unlikely to be accepted. A number of sites have now banned the use of 'tinyurl' URL replacements because spammers mask their affiliate links or links to bad neighborhoods.

It used to be that we could incorporate URLs into the article body, but more and more article sites are rejecting anything they find with a.com address. We have worked out an arrangement with most of the content sites to allow the specific use of URLs under certain circumstances, and we teach our authors how they can effectively incorporate URLs into their articles and yet avoid having their accounts banned.

We've seen a surge of "Private Label" articles in the market. These are canned, pre-written articles that people can buy and submit under their own names. Unfortunately, only the first few people who submit those articles are successful, everyone else is an "also ran". Private Label articles are like jokes on the internet. The first time you see one, it's funny. The 50th time it's just annoying.

Question: What do you think article writers should be aware of when writing articles?

Answer: There are three rules when it comes to writing articles:Rule #1: Provide Good ContentRule #2: Provide Good ContentRule #3: When in doubt, see Rules #1 and #2

If you follow those three rules, you'll do just fine. What is "good content"? It's approximately 750 words that allows the reader to come away with some knowledge that wasn't there before. Focus on a topic and make sure that the reader gets something of value at the end.

Authors should ask themselves this question:Must a reader buy my product/service in order to take action?

If the answer is "yes", then go back to the drawing board. Of course, the author may need to substitute "visit my website", "subscribe to my newsletter" or any of a dozen other calls to action based on the author's desires.

When providing newsletter content, it's important to remember that you are speaking directly to a specifically targeted audience. These are people who have subscribed to "Dog Weekly" or "Fish Tank Monthly", so if your thing is dogs or fish tanks, this is your perfect audience. Put your best foot forward. Give them really good information and they'll want to visit your site for more information. At that point you can sell them something.

Another important point is that articles stay on the article banks forever. When you include a call to action in your resource box, make sure it's not a 'limited time offer'. Don't use contact information that might go away. It's always best to send your readers to a website you control (and can update) so that if your email address or phone number changes, they will still be able to reach you.

Question: Share a few of your best article writing tips with us.

Answer: The title is key. It's the first thing people see and the first decision they make about your article. If they don't get past the title, they'll never read the rest.

A title should never be a noun. If you have a great article about fish tanks, and you title it "Fish Tanks", you're unlikely to get as many readers as you would with, for instance "How to Keep Your Fish Tank Sparkly Clean" (assuming, of course, that the article is about keeping a fish tank clean.) Add some action and some excitement to your title to draw people into the content.

Your article itself should be about one thing. Don't try to cover all aspects or every angle in a single article. Break it down into component parts and explain the most important points.

Try not to write a multi-part article series. I know that goes against some other advice you may have heard, but there are some important reasons to avoid multipart articles.

The first problem is that a reader may not have access to the other parts. How terrible would it be to find "Fish tanks Part 2" and not know how to find the first part? The second problem is that newsletter publishers may not be willing to commit to running all 16 parts of your masterpiece, and so will not print any of your work. Each article you write must be able to stand on its own, with a beginning, a middle and an end. Don't require that a reader be fluent in parts 1-3 before they read part 4. Never end your article with "to be continued..." or "the rest of this article can be found on my website..." because the content site owners are expecting you to provide content - all of it - in exchange for the link and the targeted audience they'll be delivering to you.

Question: What trends do you see in article writing and promotion, and what do you think the future holds for article writing and promotion?

Answer: We're seeing a shift in the marketplace. While at one time only "polished authors" would submit their articles, it's become much more common to get really good articles from average business owners.

People who have never written an article before are discovering that it isn't that hard. Our editors help them put out a good quality article the first time through. I can't tell you the number of emails we get thanking us for the detailed assistance provided by our review team. Anyone can write an article about a topic they're passionate about (and isn't that why they started a business in the first place?) and they can create interesting content just based on their own experiences.

I believe that the surge of "Private Label" articles will go away as people discover that only original content actually delivers the results of marketing with articles. While re-writing those articles can be effective, just replacing certain words with synonyms is not enough. You can't expect a dog newsletter owner to put "Combing Your Mutt" in the newsletter after publishing "Grooming Your Dog" in last week's newsletter.

I think people are getting more excited about bringing their own expertise to the fore. Different dog groomers can write about combing dogs and have each of them published in the dog newsletter, because each tells a specific story or anecdote, provides original tips and tricks learned "in the trenches", and brings a fresh perspective to the subject.

Will article writing and submission ever go the way of banner ads, pop ups, and FFA sites? No, because content is the foundation of the web. Other forms of marketing have come and gone - even email marketing is difficult these days - but anyone who provides good content to the content-hungry audience will see their work published all around the net, will get links from relevant sites, will see their pagerank increase, and will get more targeted traffic to their websites.

Obama Clearing Way to Tighten Sanctions Targeting Iranian Oil

President Obama has determined there is enough oil in world markets to allow countries to rely less on imports from Iran, a step that could ramp up western sanctions to deter Tehran's nuclear ambitions, an administration official said Friday.

Mr. Obama is required by law to decide by March 30, and every six months after, whether the price and supply of non-Iranian oil is sufficient to allow for countries to cut their oil purchases from Iran.

The new sanctions, passed as part of the defense budget and mandated by the Senate in a rare 100-0 vote, penalize foreign corporations or other entities that purchase oil from Iran's central bank, which collects payment for most of the country's energy exports. The sanctions are meant to pressure Iran to curb its nuclear program.

You should be able to find several indispensable facts about SEO in the following paragraphs. If there's at least one fact you didn't know before, imagine the difference it might make.

View the source of each and every page: is there JavaScript and CSS on the page? Remember that spiders may not index pages that have more than 10k or so of JavaScript or CSS embedded in them. Spiders don't enjoy getting tangled up in JavaScript. So as a general rule you should avoid putting out prompts and alerts using JavaScript every time that a page loads. Because of this rule, it is also wise to avoid link partners who do so on the pages that they link to you from. If anything looks fishy, it probably is.

CSS won't give you many problems. If you are going to use CSS, it is best to link to it from another source. Create a separate CSS page and use the tag to work it into the head of your HTML. This method will keep your file size down considerably, and since you will probably be using the same CSS on several pages, decrease your bandwidth usage. Normally a large quantity of CSS within the document isn't indicative of any suspicious behavior on the part of the linker. If you feel that you are, indeed, suffering from the fact that the site uses such an excessive proportion of CSS on the page itself, suggest to the webmaster that he/she may want to create an external CSS document and link to it in his/her header.

Check that you're still on the domain you clicked on a link to, and you haven't moved to another site or a subdomain. Some people will move you to another domain while telling that's their site and your link is there, relying on you not checking the address bar. This trick is all too common and happens to folks who are new to SEO every single day. This sad fact will continue until people begin to catch it every time.

If you don't have accurate details regarding SEO, then you might make a bad choice on the subject. Don't let that happen: keep reading.

If the domain has changed, delete your backlink to the site in question immediately and then email the webmaster with your complaint. If the webmaster does not fix the problem you may even want to request that they remove the link as the site may wind up discredited as a link farm or some such thing that you do not want to be associated with for fear of being banned from many popular search engines with technology used to combat link farms.

On a related subject, when you check your back links, make sure that these links appear in legitimate places. If the site is completely dedicated to linking to other sites and doesn't seem to be a directory or something similar you will want to get your link removed as soon as possible. There is no time when one link is worth the risk of being permanently banned from any popular search engine. Aside from the traffic that you will lose from that one search engine, you may wind up "red flagged" so to speak. It seems to be common practice among search engines that if one finds faulty activity the rest seem to find out soon afterwards.

Overall, if it seems dodgy, leave it alone. It's better to sacrifice one link in caution than to destroy your site's rankings by accepting one you're not sure of. There are hundreds of situations aside from link farms that can and will give you trouble. It would be impossible to list every scam as there are people who make their living (or seem to anyway) in creating and executing these scams. Whenever there is a new form of "SEO" technology that "can't fail," you should watch out because it is almost guaranteed to blow up in your face. The only truly powerful and guaranteed method of SEO is to make your site valuable to your visitors and then let it fall where it may in the realm of the search engine.

It is difficult, after you have optimized your pages and submitted them to search engines and directories, to sit back and wait, but there is not much that can be done aside from attempting to accumulate links from good, solid places. The work that you have done is bound to pay off sooner or later as long as you stay honest. When it comes to the world of SEO, honesty is, indeed, the best policy.

When word gets around about your command of SEO facts, others who need to know about SEO will start to actively seek you out.

Apple Supplier in China Pledges Changes After Report Cites Violations

Foxconn, which manufactures electronics for such companies as Apple, Dell, Amazon and others, has pledged to sharply curtail the number of working hours within its Chinese factories and significantly increase wages.

The moves come after a wide-ranging inspection by the Fair Labor Association, a monitoring group, found widespread problems — including numerous instances where Foxconn violated Chinese law and industry codes of conduct by having employees work more than 60 hours a week, sometimes for more than 11 days in a row.

Apple, which recently joined the association, had asked the group to investigate plants manufacturing iPhones, iPads and other devices. In recent months, a growing outcry over conditions at overseas factories has prompted protests and petitions, and several labor rights organizations have started scrutinizing Apple's suppliers.

Training is one of the most important parts of owning a Labrador Retriever. Through training, you are helping your Labrador Retriever become a well-behaved and desirable dog everybody loves. Training will also keep your dog safe because he is able to comprehend and obey your command, helpful in emergency and dangerous situations.

However, a wrong training approach may ruin your dreams of having a nicely trained dog. It helps if you are well-equipped with the right knowledge in training your beloved Labrador Retriever.

Puppy training - You can start training your dog when he is still a puppy. Training a puppy six to eight weeks old is fine but you can start training earlier than that depending on your pup's characteristics and response to training. It is easier to train a puppy because at this age, he might not have developed bad manners yet and if he has, it can easily be corrected. But remember that training is not only for puppies, you can still teach old dogs new tricks.

Use positive reinforcement - When you use positive reinforcement, you are adding or offering something to your dog to increase the chance of repeating what he did correctly. Giving him his favorite treat after following your down command is an example of positive reinforcement.

Your voice matters - When you issue a command, it should be issued in the same words and same tone of voice. Use a friendly and excited voice when you give commands like come and firm voice in commands like down or stay. Avoid yelling or nagging at your dog.

Training sessions - Keep training sessions short and interesting. Fifteen-minute session is enough to keep your dog interested in the training. Focus on a single command per session and always reward him with loving praise or his favorite treat if he has successfully performed the command. Spend some time playing after the training to keep his interest.

Punishment - In order for your dog to behave properly, his mistakes must be corrected promptly. You can correct your dog by giving commands using a firm and sharp tone of voice. As much as possible, avoid physical punishment. But if physical punishment is really necessary, especially dogs with harder temperament, a quick and gentle tug on his training collar is enough. Remember that punishment should only be issued when you catch your dog in the act of doing mistake. Your dog may not understand why he is being punished now for urinating in your living room five hours ago.

Winston Moseley attacked and stabbed 24-year-old Kitty Genovese at 3 a.m. on the street near her Kew Gardens home in Queens NY on 11 March 1964. Her screams prompted one neighbor to shout out, causing Moseley to flee, but he soon returned to rape the helpless, bleeding woman and stab her to death. Her subsequent screams throughout the 30-minute ordeal fell on the deaf ears of 38 of her neighbors. Other than the neighbor who'd shouted just once, not a single one lifted a finger to help her or even call the police.

A national news media furor erupted over the neighbors' stunning apathy but they refused to explain their baffling behavior.

Sprouting from this morass, some commentator concocted a scheme to counter such apathy in the future: all outdoor crime victims should yell, "Fire!" instead of "Help! Police!" Supposedly, apathetic neighbors would fear a fire spreading to their homes and call the Fire Department, and then fire trucks would scare away the attacker.

UNTESTEDThough never tested for feasibility, and despite the rarity of such apathy, this goofy notion somehow grew into "folk wisdom" still taught today by many so-called crime experts. This supposed emergency maneuver has escaped any serious scrutiny of its logic - or lack thereof - for 44 years. Until now.

Not surprisingly, yelling "Fire" has even been reported as being successful once in awhile. Not because it's a clever strategy, but because whatever help it had summoned would've been forthcoming with any plea - regardless of its wording. Most bystanders are not apathetic and will at least start hollering, turning on porch lights, honking car horns, and so on - and of course, calling the police. Predators almost always prefer secrecy, so any attention from bystanders usually scares them off.

On top of that, most houses are not built closely side-by-side thus are not vulnerable to a spreading blaze. So, most of the time, yelling "Fire!" makes no sense whatsoever.

Finally, bluffs are always risky in any situation, but trying to bluff bystanders into saving your life is beyond foolish. Trying to manipulate them with a fictitious fire when you really want to be rescued from a crime adds dangerous confusion to a crisis. Bystanders have often reported that when they can't see a fire anywhere, they assume the woman yelling "Fire!" is fooling around or drunkenly fighting with her "boyfriend" - and they disregard her after all.

Why risk confusing your potential rescuers when you're in deep trouble? A life-threatening emergency is not the time to gamble on some silly trick. Instead, you should simply identify your plight accurately by yelling "Help! Police!"

LOOKING CLOSER AT THE "GENOVESE SYNDROME"Alone, a single bystander may or may not intervene to rescue a stranger - depending upon many factors, such as the degree of risk involved, individual ability, etc. But most people will at least phone the police.

With several bystanders, additional factors come into play, such as how well they know each other as well as the shame they'd feel by not acting - by at least calling the police and/or creating a ruckus (perhaps from a safe distance) to deter the criminal.

Furthermore, in "The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference," Malcolm Gladwell wrote that psychologists Bibb Latane of Columbia and John Darley of NYU studied the Bystander Apathy in the Genovese case (a.k.a. the "Genovese Syndrome") and found that what most affected "helping behavior" was how many people witness an event.

The larger the group, the more each person's responsibility is diffused. Each thinks others will help, or if no one is helping, there isn't really a problem. They aren't heartless and uncaring, they just feel less responsibility to act. Ironically, Latane and Darley say, had Kitty Genovese been attacked with just one bystander nearby, she might well have been rescued.

NOW CONNECT THAT TO THISYears later, an investigation found the final reason for the neighbors' shameful apathy - Genovese had a neighborhood reputation for promiscuity. In 2004, on the 40th anniversary of Genovese's death, Dr. Tina Trent wrote in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, "Although the '38 Witnesses' were in their homes, not a courtroom, they judged the victim, not her attacker, and they sentenced her to death."

So, while the rationale for the Yell "Fire!" advice was goofy from the start, we can add the psychological group diffusion and the self-righteous moral disdain to bury that silliness forever.

LESSONS LEARNEDDon't call the dogcatcher to douse a fire, don't call an ambulance to tow your car, and don't yell "Fire!" when you're attacked. Instead, yell "Help! Police!"

[However, sounding a false fire alarm to deter a criminal might be effective in certain instances - such as being chased through a hotel hallway. Yell "Help! Police!" while pounding on suite doors as you pass, and pull a fire alarm lever - make as much noise as possible. Then hope people don't treat you like Kitty Genovese.]

RESCUE YOURSELFUltimately, though, your first line-of-defense should not be the wildly unpredictable availability of helpful bystanders or police or firemen to rescue you. You must rescue yourself! Because when seconds count - cops are minutes away!

Now, if Kitty Genovese had had the chance to read the advice that you're about to learn, she might well have escaped virtually unscathed. But, alas, Crime-Safety-Security.com didn't exist back then. Modern "noisemakers" didn't exist yet either (though old-fashioned whistles are quite effective - if attached by a rather weak beaded-metal chain instead of a cord that can be used to strangle), nor did pepper spray exist back then. Today, however, you have the following strategy - and modern tools - to escape Kitty's fate.

SET YOUR BOUNDARIESNever turn your back on anyone you don't trust - that invites an attack you won't see coming. If he begins to approach you, take an aggressive stance, put one hand in a pocket as though you have a weapon ready, raise your other hand in a "STOP!" gesture, and fiercely command him to "STAY AWAY FROM ME!" (Add foul cursing and as much menace as possible.)

Better yet, also hold pepper spray and a noisemaker visible and at the ready. Their visible presence alone may well deter an attack.

If he keeps moving toward you - that's your early-warning-sign that he's probably a predator - so you can either flee and/or activate your noisemaker and use your pepper spray.

"Fight or flight" are the two most well known options. Martial arts' theory usually adds surrender to the mix. I've added two more options: outsmart and posture, and aligned them all with FBI guidelines (and clarified the FBI's clunky terminology).

A VICTIM'S FIVE OPTIONS: (see Resource Box for more details):1. Posturing: presenting yourself as a tough target (predators prefer easy prey). If that doesn't work:2. Fleeing, the most obvious choice, might not be possible. If not:3. Outsmarting: by verbally defusing a confrontation and maneuvering toward escape. If that doesn't work:4. Surrendering and hoping for the best; or preferably as a prelude to an escape, perhaps aided by:5. Fighting like a mad dog to enable your escape. Stun & run.

It's impossible to fully anticipate the panicky chaos of a sudden threat forcing you to make split-second life-and-death decisions. Nonetheless, understanding your options now will help your Intuition choose an option then.

ENHANCING YOUR OPTIONSPepper spray & a noisemaker visibly ready will greatly enhance your first option - Posturing as a tough target - and probably deter a predator immediately. Your fifth option - Fighting - is enhanced as well.

In the end, though, Kitty Genovese's tragic fate ultimately helped lead you to a greater understanding of the dynamics and options within an all too common nightmare: a lone woman facing a monster. Now you know how to rescue yourself.

Support in U.S. for Afghan War Drops Sharply, Poll Finds

WASHINGTON — After a series of violent episodes and setbacks, support for the war in Afghanistan has dropped sharply among both Republicans and Democrats in recent months as increasing numbers of Americans say that the United States should not be involved in the fighting there, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

The poll found that more than two-thirds of those surveyed — 69 percent – think that the United States should not be at war in Afghanistan. That number is a significant increase from just four months ago, when 53 percent said that Americans should no longer be fighting in the decade-old conflict.

There were even sharper increases when respondents were asked for their impressions on the state of the war. The poll found that 68 percent thought the fighting was going "somewhat badly" or "very badly,'' compared with 42 percent who had those impressions in November 2011. The latest poll was conducted by telephone from March 21 to 25 with 986 adults nationwide.

If your friends are insistent on learning some of your tricks, show them a few trouble-free ones but don't give away your best, most amazing tricks. Guard these well. You don't want your fans to lose concentration in you and they will if they know how you do all of your best coin tricks.

Tyshawn Taylor came out of his slump in a big way, scoring 22 points to lead Kansas to an 80-67 victory over North Carolina that returned the Jayhawks to the Final Four in the N.C.A.A. men's basketball tournament for the first time since winning it all in 2008.

Tiger Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Sunday, his first PGA Tour victory in more than two years.

Woods shot a final round 70 to finish at 13 under par at the Bay Hill course, where he had won six times before, Reuters reported.

This was Woods's 72nd PGA Tour title and his first since the BMW Championship in September 2009.

Simple Magic Tricks - Entertainment

There is nothing more entertaining to do at parties or gatherings than doing a number of simple magic tricks. There are a number of magic tricks that are fairly easy to learn. You do not need to have extraordinary talent to do such magic tricks for entertainment. All you will need is some time to read and understand the trick as well as to practice. Here are some simple magic tricks that you can try out:

The Non-Bursting BalloonIf you have ever seen magicians push a needle into a balloon only to amazingly see it still inflated and not bursting, this trick will give you in on the secret. For this simple magic trick, you will need an inflated balloon, a sharp pin long enough for your audience to see and a tiny piece of transparent adhesive tape. To prepare for this trick, you take a small piece of adhesive tape and place it somewhere in the part of the balloon where you wish to push the sharp pin into. Make sure to stick it so that it evenly adheres to the rubber surface of the balloon.

In doing this trick, try to tell your audience that you will attempt to insert a pin into an inflated balloon without letting it burst as what will usually happen. Take the inflated balloon in your hand and hold a sharp pin with the other. Slowly try to bring them together. As you do so, try to locate the area where you have placed a tiny piece of adhesive tape. Then try to gently insert the sharp pin into it.

Make sure that you do this carefully by rolling the pin as you try to insert it into the balloon. Slowly you will see the pin going through the balloon, incredibly without the balloon bursting.

The secret to this trick is that the adhesive tape holds together the rubber surface of the balloon even when the sharp pin is inserted through it and preventing it from tearing apart. What you get is a balloon with a hole but does not burst. In doing the trick, try to show the audience that you have successfully inserted a sharp pin into the balloon without bursting. But to let them know that you are using an ordinary pin.

Take it out slowly and then use it again to pierce the balloon and let it burst. You may need to do this before the balloon releases the air inside it which will obviously give your secret trick away.

Mysterious Coin BalanceHere is another simple trick that would surely amaze your audience but would require a bit of dexterity using your hands. You will need a large coin and then a straight pin to make this trick work. In order to do this trick, try to practice concealing the straight pin in one hand. With the other hand, try to take the large coin out of your pocket and show it to the audience.

Tell your audience that you will try to use your mind over matter abilities in order to make the large coin stand up between your fingertips. Allow the audience to take a closer look at the coin to convince them that it is just an ordinary coin. Or you can choose to use a coin from a volunteer.

Once you have the coin back, place it on top of your fingertips where you have concealed the straight pin. Now raise the coin to a standing position along with the straight pin. Do this while keeping the pin and the coin close together. Then slowly remove your hand from the coin and it will magically stand up, with the help of the straight pin that only you know is there.

An aide to Mr. Cheney, Kara Ahern, said that he had been waiting for a transplant for more than 20 months and did not know the identity of the heart donor.

Mr. Cheney was recovering Saturday night at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., after surgery earlier in the day.

Magic Trick With Household Objects - Shopping - Toys

Every magician has to start somewhere. While some magic tricks are complicated and require a lot of skill to perform, many are very simple and still just as impressive.

These simple tricks can be learned in a matter of minutes, require no gimmicks or preparation, and will stun spectators whether worked into a stage show or performed on the street.

The first trick can be performed almost anywhere and stuns spectators. "The Jumping Toothpick" is an incredibly simple trick that requires only two toothpicks.

In "The Jumping Toothpick" you lay one toothpick across another on the edge of a table. You can then make the toothpick move, jump, and even flip over, seemingly with telekinetic powers.

Begin by pinching the edge of one toothpick between your thumb and index fingers like you are making an "OK" sign, with the toothpick extending towards your pinky. Then place the fingernail of your middle finger against the side your thumb is touching. You should now be able to put pressure against the toothpick with the nail of your middle finger. Hold this first toothpick parallel to the edge of the table. Lay the second toothpick so that one end is resting on the table, and the other end is resting perpendicularly on the toothpick you are holding.

Now for the secret: Use your index finger to push the toothpick you are holding against the nail of your middle finger. Squeeze hard and create some tension. Now slide your middle finger towards your index. If you are creating enough tension against your nail, it will "pop" as you slide back.

This pop will cause the second toothpick to jump into the air. A really good pop will make the toothpick flip over or even send it flying. The rougher the toothpick is, the better effect you can get. The trick can be performed with wooden matches as well.

You must really apply a lot of tension to get the trick to work properly, and your hand may even shake. So when you perform the trick, talk about how you must focus your "powers". This gives you a good excuse to be tensing your hand so much.

With your free hand you can employ some misdirection by pointing your palm towards the toothpicks or making finger movements. This will take spectators' attention away from where the magic is really happening. It may even cause them to look for strings or ask you to perform the trick without your free hand floating.

What makes "The Jumping Toothpick" such a great trick is that it can be performed anywhere with a table and toothpicks or matches. Considering the amount of time people spend in eating establishments you'll have a lot of opportunity to impress your friends with this one. It also requires almost no skill.

Putting a coin through a table is another trick that requires only a table and a simple household object. In this trick you appear to slam a coin through a solid object. It requires no preparation and is simple to learn, although it will take some practice to make it look good.

The secret to this trick lies in a technique that every magician should master. "The French Drop" is a technique that has been used by magicians for hundreds of years to vanish coins.

You begin "The French Drop" by grasping a coin between your thumb and your index and middle fingers. The palm should be facing towards you with the back of the hand to the audience. You reach over with the other hand to grab the coin, but instead you drop it into the palm of the hand that was originally holding it.

It now appears that the coin has switched hands when in fact it has never left the hand it started in. You must practice to make the effect appear convincing. In the right hands this technique is flawless, and it is a basic element of many more elaborate coin tricks.

As you perform this vanish focus your gaze on the hand that is doing the grabbing. Once it has supposedly grabbed the coin, hold it high in front of your body, shake it, or yell some magic words. Now that the audience's attention is on this hand, you can inconspicuously palm the coin with your other hand as it drops to the side or points to the coin's supposed new position.

Once you have mastered "The French Drop" the rest of this trick is simple. You simply say the magic words, slam your hand on the table, and the coin has gone through the table and been caught by your other hand. The audience is unaware it never left there in the first place.These two simple tricks, when performed correctly, are sure to absolutely stun observers. The best thing about them is that they employ sleight of hand, misdirection, and patter. All of these are required skills for any magician to develop. Get practicing!

U.S. Moves to Ease Limits on Use of Data in Counterterror Analysis

The Obama administration is moving to relax restrictions on how counterterrorism analysts may access, store and search information about Americans gathered by government agencies for purposes other than national security threats.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. is expected on Thursday to sign new guidelines for the National Counterterrorism Center, which was created in 2004 to foster intelligence sharing and to serve as a clearinghouse for terrorism threats, according to officials.

The guidelines will lengthen to five years — from 180 days — the center's ability to retain private information about Americans when there is suspicion that they are tied to terrorism, intelligence officials said. The guidelines are also expected to result in the center making more copies of entire databases and "data-mining them" — using complex algorithms to search for patterns that could indicate a threat — than it currently does.

After a Snag, Trade of Tebow to Jets Is Confirmed

The Jets completed a trade for Tim Tebow on Wednesday night, ending hours of uncertainty that came after the team had already announced that the deal had been made with the Denver Broncos.

At 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, the Jets' official Twitter feed announced that the team had acquired Tim Tebow, the popular but polarizing quarterback, from the Denver Broncos. At 1:03 p.m., reporters who regularly cover the team received a text message acknowledging that the Jets and the Broncos had agreed in principle to the deal.

And then the proposed deal stalled, ostensibly because the Jets failed to fully understand a provision in Tebow's contract that would cause them to owe Denver about $5 million. Into the mix came the Jacksonville Jaguars, leaving the Jets to face the possibility that a high-profile trade would collapse in the most public of manners.

The Jets were able to salvage the trade, however, and the Broncos confirmed its completion Wednesday night.

Training a Cat to do Tricks - Family - Pets

Are the tricks that your cat are doing, are these tricks that you approve of your cat doing or are they bad habits or behaviors? Did you know that you are able to teach a cat the difference between good tricks and bad tricks?

Teaching tricks to your cat and depending on the trick, the task can be easy one. Jumping in a hoop, or over a stick, sitting, or meowing, are all good tricks to teach them. With the different tricks, this will help show behaviors that you approve of. Also, could help keep the cat from climbing on furniture, drapes, and counter.

When training a cat a new trick, you will want to reward the cat with something that the cat can identify with, for the behavior. A good healthy treat is a good reward sources, small liver biscuits or a simple massage is another good way for your cat to know that this is a good behavior. You will want to keep the snack simple and small and some times, they may earn more than one treat. By touching your cat, petting, massage, or just holding your cat, this is a way that both of you and your cat can show each other's affection. Once the cat learns a new trick or behavior, then you will be able to reduce the snack. In addition, in time you will not have to reward your cat for tricks or behaviors that you had taught them.

Let us look at a new trick getting your cat to jump over a stick. Each time the cat jumps over the stick you will want to reward them. Another good reason you want to teach your cat to jump over the stick, and hopefully this will help if your cat is not jumping off the counter top or table.

First, get your cat near the stick and let them explore the stick. Next, you will want to coax your cat to step over the stick A good way to do this is put a piece of pop corn on the opposite side of the stick, from where the cat is. Each time your cat takes a step over the stick, you can reward them with a treat. Continue in steps to play with the cat and the stick. Continue to raise the stick so that the cat can eventually jump over the stick in order to get the piece of pop corn. If the cat does not jump over then no treat is given. Remember to reward your cat when they do the step to a new trick Finally they will be able to do the full trick with knowing that there will be a treat on the other side.

Another trick that is simple to train your cat is to get the cat's favorite small toy, put a piece of yarn around it, and drag the toy on the floor. You cat should be following the toys and should be jumping at it as if it was hunting. Cats love to play hunt with things that move. They will pounce, jump, and run after it.Teaching your cat to sit at right times is another trick to teach them. There are different ways that this can be done. Teach your cat its proper name first then use the sit teaching this will be much easier. Training a cat to sit can be done the same way as training other pet animals to sit. You may have to take the cat and get it to sit first by positioning it in the sitting position, and give treat for the good work.

Teaching cats new tricks can be fun. Remember to be patience and kind to your cat and your cat will be your friend for ever.

Learning The Tricks: Hankerchief Tricks - Entertainment

Magic tricks have been around for centuries and are practiced in every society. They are among the most popular past times both for children and adult.

Tricks may make use of materials or objects such as coins, cards, tables, game cards, and number tricks but the one that remains to be the most popular among children and the one that is first learned by a beginner is the handkerchief.

Linen or Silk?

Tricks using a handkerchief can be either performed in whatever material it was made of. However, the type of tricks to be performed determines the type of handkerchief you are to use.

For knots and similar activities, a silk handkerchief is chiefly used because they slide quickly in the process of tying up. Other magic tricks using a handkerchief requires a hard material like linen as in the case of bringing about a hypnotized effect on a handkerchief.

Below are just some of the most common magic tricks that involve the use of handkerchief together with explanations on how magic works.

- Standing Handkerchief - This type of magic trick makes use of a hemmed linen handkerchief which is ironed to make it even more stiff. This very same stiffness determines the success for this performance.

The handkerchief is taken folded from somewhere and spread on the table. The magician picks it up on the centerfold and raises it up in the air until it takes the shape of a small tent.

He will do the usual mystic hand pass while putting the handkerchief in an upright position. The hanky will stay upright as predicted as if it was put on a spell.

- Detachable Thumb - In this trick, you will need both a hanky and a piece of carrot. The carrot should be cut in a way that resembles your thumb. It should be as small and has the same thickness as your finger.

Partly cover your hand and parts of your thumb finger with the hanky. You will need both sleight of hand and dexterity in this kind of activity. Quickness is the rule of the game in order not to spoil the trick.

Place the carrot in the same position as your thumb showing only that portion while covered with handkerchief. Patter a little bit with your audience describing how you have been feeling about your finger since you accidentally hurt it.

Ask one to participate to do the inspection and possible massaging for them. The moment they hold the carrot, release it and act like you were surprised.

- Handkerchief That Changes Color - Apparently, this is one of the simplest magic trick usually done by magicians in terms of minimal effect on the audience but one of the most difficult when it comes to preparation and production.

The magician will show the audience a hanky and toss it around, up and down, right and left, and changes color along the way. The hanky does not actually changes its color since the magician is holding not one, but two hankie!

As the hankie is tossed up and down, he makes it a point to reverse the position of the topmost hankie so that the one in the bottom with a different color is showed up and the hankie apparently changes color.

This quite a difficult thing to do for many suspecting audience are trying to find out if you got several hankie at hand. This requires swiftness in the movement of your hand and making sure that the hankies you are holding do not move independently of one another.

Tips on Performing Handkerchief Tricks

- Be swift - Try to be mindful of astute members of the audience at all times. Even the most seemingly attentive spectator are keen enough even the most slightest mistake made along the process of performing your tricks thereby spoiling it.

- Mouth Shut - Secrecy is the basic rule that magicians should keep in mind. Blabbing about the secret of your tricks makes it even less appealing to onlookers. Allow the audience to make their own guesses and find it out in their own way. In short, keep them mystified.

- Practice! Although practice may not help you master all the skills needed for a certain trick, constant and intense practice helps and keep you on the right track.

Additionally, convey a feeling of excitement and enthusiasm in what you are doing for it helps you connect with the audience and infect them with your attitude along the way.

Learning Paper Tricks - Entertainment

Performing magic tricks has always been one of the most popular past times enjoyed by a lot of people from all walks of life. There are various kinds of magic tricks. One of many kinds of the usual scene-stealing tricks is a paper trick. There could be innumerable ways to deliver a paper trick. Here are a few of those paper tricks that can be easily learned by a new magic aficionado:

1. A paper-tearing trick is a clever method of tearing and bringing back the form of a sheet of paper. You can do this trick mostly on tissue papers. This could be a little different compared to other paper tricks.

You will hand out two kinds of tissue papers; it can be color white or black. You will tear both the papers and fold them into tiny squares. When he opens the paper, the two are still there, but surprisingly it is formed into a large white square and in the center, there is a black square.

You wonder why there are no torn traces on the paper. The have an idea on the trick, the restored paper is already formed by sticking a black square on each side of the large white paper. On a particular side, the black part is paste all three edges and one edge is left open.

The paper formed is then folded into a tiny square, and the outside have an opening. It is then laid on the table for about 5 seconds. You will get the restored form and place it behind his back.

The paper is divided into four pieces of squares, and the whole is bundle is again shown in the front, the tricky part on this is that you will make a little wave in his hands, making the two torn pieces together, and then slowly opening the restored torn paper. This takes a narrow chance to poke the torn pieces into the secret pocket. Ending the trick with showing both hands and they will find nothing.

2. Another trick is called the generous offer. You will need a piece of paper and hand it out to a person. Ask him to tear it into quarters. It must be torn equally, you will then get the papers and give him back a quarter of it. He then thinks that the task is easy enough, and then he may ask for a prize for doing it.

You can use a different way to approach this trick in using slang expressions of offering or donate "two bits". In this approach two pieces of paper is given to him, as it presents the two bits you said.

3. The next trick you may learn is the look easy trick. Find a sheet of paper and tear it in two thirds. It is required not totally tear the end sections. It should be a little loose, and the outcome will be a slit parallel sheet of paper with three flaps.

Give it to the person and tell him to have a hold on the edge of the flaps and hide one in each hand. From the center of the paper, you will make him tear the end flaps. It seems to be a piece of cake, but it is not. When he tries to work on it, only one edge of the flap is torn. The pull is purposely even distributed.

4. The floating paper ball needs to be performed under proper situations because it requires a little experiment. You need to crumple one piece of paper into a ball and you will have to hold it using your left hand with your right hand on top of it. You will remove your left hand, and have the paper just floated in the air moving upward to your right hand.

The trick is done because of the black silk thread. The thread is placed over your right ear forming a loop in one of the ends. The other end is tied loosely to your black coat button. They do not have the idea that you squeezed it around on the loose end, before the paper ball is formed.

When you move your right hand upward, you will use your right thumb to catch the thread. You will then draw the thread tightly so that when you take off your hand, the ball automatically floats. Move your hand forward, then raise the ball. Bringing it back lowers it. On the last part, you will have to get the ball on your left hand and untying it from the thread. The right hand brushing your hair will lift the loop from your ear, and the thread just falls down on the floor, without one noticing it.

Alright, hold it! Stop banging your head trying to figure out how to train your dog tricks. I understand that some dogs are a bit on the slow side so teaching them tricks can be exceedingly frustrating.

Listen, I've tried a variety of training methods, but when it comes to teaching tricks to a dog - clicker training is hands down the winner!

Okay, let's talk a bit more about how to train your dog tricks using the clicker.

The clicker is actually a solid pre-reinforce tool. It's an indicator for telling your dog that positive reinforcements such as tasty treats will be provided if he obeys your command.

So, the first thing you should do is charge the clicker - this is very important! In order to charge the clicker, you should take the dog to a quiet location and bring some treats along. Next, present a tiny bit of treat to him and when he chews it, you immediately click the clicker.

Do this several times so that your dog understands the connection between the sound of the clicker and those tasty treats.

Once you've done the charging process, start teaching him basic dog tricks such as the target stick trick. Here's how:

(1) Dangle a target sticks in front your dog. He'll probably sniff it due to curiosity, so click and treat.

The American soldier suspected of going on a rampage that left 16 Afghan villagers dead is Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, according to a senior American official.

The new information comes on the same day President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan chastised the United States, saying he was at "the end of the rope" over what he termed the United States' lack of cooperation in investigating the incident.

On Thursday, an American official had said that the suspect had been drinking alcohol — a violation of military rules in combat zones — and suffering from the stress related to his fourth combat tour, and tensions with his wife about the deployments, on the night of the massacre.

A jury convicted Dharun Ravi, a former Rutgers University student, of hate crimes, witness tampering and other charges. Mr. Ravi used a webcam to spy on his roommate kissing another man in their dorm room. Tyler Clementi, the roommate, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge three days after Mr. Ravi viewed him on the webcam. The case became a symbol of the struggles facing gay, lesbian and bisexual teenagers and the problem of cyberbullying in an era when laws governing hate crimes have not kept up with evolving technology.

Amazon Kindle Fire, Google TV and other great gadgets for 2012 - Computers - Software

It is almost the end of another year. "What better time to look at gadgets that could help your business in 2012? No longer are the business gadgets just restricted to a new laptop or iPhone but a plethora of gadgets that deliver real function, not gimmicks" "In this article we look at a number of gadgets to help your business" What did we miss? What gadgets will you are looking at next year?

The new Kindle is officially 'on fire', set to take the 2nd spot in the tablet wars, behind the iPad2 and ahead of Android powered tablets and the Blackberry Tablet. "At 7 the Kindle is bigger than the iPhone" smaller than the iPad. "The screen size is good for reading emails and basic web browsing, not so good for reading magazines"

Like the iPhone or iPad, creating documents or writing emails is fine but not do well for long form document writing or creating. "The Kindle works as a great media consumption tool - with access to the Kindle store you can purchase and download magazines, books, music and videos from the vast Amazon store" "With email support you can easily read and respond to emails on the go and the web browser allows you to keep up to date with your sites"

"Based on an Android operating system, the Kindle Fire also has its own app store allowing you to download form a large, but slightly limited range of apps" No Drop box or Spotify on here yet. With your own assigned email address, the Kindle allows you to send articles and documents to it so you can read these on the go too.

The Kindle Fire can work in the UK right now but with severe limitations. Access to the app store and content is strictly US based making it hard to easily use without a few tricks up your sleeve. Larger than the iPhone, it allows you more room to easily read documents and emails, slightly smaller than the iPad means it is harder to read image heavy documents or magazines. The lightweight and tactile design will make it a serious contender for business use when it launches here (hopefully) next year.

2 Apple iPhone Micro USB AdapterThe smallest of our gadgets in the list, but one of the most essential. With the release of the iPhone 4, Apple also released this clever little adapter. Converting a Micros USB adaptor to an Apple connection. The Micro USB is increasingly the default wire for charging mobile 'phones so this little connector works brilliantly if you don't have the full charging lead to hand or you operate more than one 'phone.

3 Power GorillasKeeping 'phones and laptops charged whist traveling has to be one of the biggest issues for modern mobile business, which is why I never travel without my Power Gorilla. An odd name for a handy gadget, this is simply a large flat-shaped battery pack charging any mobile device you connect it to. The pack, twice the size of an iPhone and about the same depth, works to charge anything through a USB connection and a pack of included connectors. It can also power laptops with the connection of a mag safe adaptor (like you have on airplanes) for extra.

Lasting for days of mobile charging, the Power Gorilla is an essential gadget for any business traveler. Priced over 100 it is an expensive item but the market for additional batteries and emergency charging is set to be big this Christmas, with companies including Duracell offering low cost 'emergency chargers' which can help you out of a tight spot.

4 Jam boxMost smart phones come with speakerphone capability, but have you ever tried grouping five executives around a handset? Sadly it fails to work effectively because it is too quiet or the sound quality is not good enough. Jam box is a small compact speaker from Jawbone, the makers of premium Bluetooth headsets. The Jam box is a small compact speaker using Bluetooth to connect to your 'phone. It will then become your speaker offering greater sound quality for those important calls. The Jam box is small enough to fit into a laptop bag (or beach bag) for easy transportation, amplifying anything you wish to share from your phone.

5 Google Chrome bookWhen Google launched their Chrome book concept, they asked, "why do you bother waiting to load up your computer only to go straight online and check your emails? Why not go straight to emails and skip loading everything you don't need.' And so the Chrome book was born. A laptop that has no operating system, loading straight to web browser (Chrome) allowing you to check your Google Mail, search on Google and experience the web as if you were on a normal computer, without Solitaire.

"The first generation of Chrome books launched in the UK during the autumn" The first books are slightly lighter than your average laptop and load far quicker, logging you straight into a Google account. From there, all of your content will be accessed through cloud based apps (preferably, but not exclusively through Google.)

So, when once you wrote documents on word and saved them to your desktop, you now edit them in Google Docs and save them to your Google storage. The browser can be extended to perform most other tasks through its Chrome Extensions and access to the Chrome Store.

If you are used to using Google Docs or Google Apps (as featured in last month's article) you will find this normal procedure. If you are not, it may take a little getting used to.

As with many first generation products, the physical aesthetics could be nicer, but that will change in time.

6 Google TVAn increasing global trend is the rise of parallel media consumption on the television and on a 'second screen'. Usually a mobile device or tablet whilst watching TV has been the standard form of two screen consumption but this may change in 2012. John Lewis have reported that 80% of their large screen TV sales will be connected, meaning sets that have Internet access and a basic set of social apps.

In 2012 we expect to see Google TV launch in the UK and with it a full app store. Eric Schmidt, Chairman of Google suggests 'most' TVs will have Google TV capability by the end of 2012.

To date the Google TV and its competitor the Apple TV have been quite lacklustre, allowing big screen media consumption with side by side app use (Google) or streaming from content from the cloud or your iPhone (Apple.)

The Google TV update will bring the full Google Market app store to your television allowing all the interaction and app use currently experienced on the Android phone or tablet. This becomes important as the Google TV could replace the boardroom computer which can deliver presentations, interaction without missing a minute of Bloomberg.

7 KinectBelieve it or not, the Microsoft Kinect has a business use. The motion sensor that has us jumping around like loons could well end up in the boardroom. The Kinect Effect is the latest Microsoft launch to bring Kinect to the classroom and into the office. A new competition offers app developers up to 20,000 to develop apps that extend the Kinect possibility. In a new video to promote the Kindle Effect, Microsoft shows applications including a Tedesys system allowing surgeons in Spain to gesture their way through patient records during surgery, the use of a Kindle to encourage rehabilitation exercises at and a virtual showroom for Toyota cars. Think Minority Report not Dance Central and you will have an idea of the business potential.

Suspect in Afghan Attacks Had Been Drinking, U.S. Official Says

The American staff sergeant suspected of killing 16 Afghan villagers had been drinking alcohol — a violation of military rules in combat zones — and suffering from the stress related to his fourth combat tour and tensions with his wife about the deployments on the night of the massacre, a senior American official said Thursday.

"When it all comes out, it will be a combination of stress, alcohol and domestic issues — he just snapped," said the official, who has been briefed on the investigation and who spoke on condition of anonymity because the soldier has not yet been formally charged.

As new details emerged about possible reasons behind the shootings, the American official said the military was preparing to move the sergeant to a prison in the United States as early as Friday, most likely to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., just a day after he was flown to a detention site in Kuwait from Afghanistan.

Representative Gary Ackerman of New York Says He Will Not Seek Re-election

Representative Gary Ackerman, a longtime member of Congress from Queens and Long Island, announced on Thursday that he would not seek re-election, in an unexpected development that brings an end to a colorful political career.

In a statement, Mr. Ackerman said: "The residents of Queens and Long Island have honored me with their trust and support for the past 34 years, first as a New York state senator, and for the past 15 terms as a member of Congress. I've been truly privileged to have had the opportunity to fight for the beliefs of my neighbors in both the state capital and in the halls of Congress."

His term will end Jan. 2, 2013.

All of us folks who are lucky enough to already have an iPhone know how much fun they can be just to play around with. Playing with my iPhone a lot myself, I have discovered some cool tips and tricks that you may find useful.

1. If you tap once at the very top of the screen when you are on the internet, it will take you back to the top of the window rather than having to scroll all the way back up. A nice time saving feature.

2. If you set the font to the smallest size, you can read more in the internet window. An advantage of this is that when you want to click a link, you can pinch (expand) that area and the link will come up very large, making it much easier to click.

3. Rather than posting the full address of internet sites in bookmarks, you can post the equivalent RSS address instead into Apple's RSS reader and save that as your bookmark. This way you can quickly see if there's anything interesting on your favorite site rather than downloading the whole homepage.

4. If you are writing something and the iPhone flags a word as misspelled that you know is not misspelled, cancel the correction 3 times and the word will be put into the dictionary. If you write a lot, this feature is quite useful!

5. The magnifying glass is a nice iPhone tool when you are typing an email or any other text. If you tap once and hold, a magnifying glass will pop up showing you a zoomed in view of your words and cursor. You can now easily place the cursor wherever you want. This makes editing your writing very easy.

6. You can move icons around, but not on the home screen. You have to go to the ipod section. Go to iPod > More > Edit. Now you can drag your icons all around. This can also be done in the phone section.

7. To reset your iphone, hold down the right button and the "home" front button for about 6 seconds. To power it back on, push the top button. This is different than a regular shutdown, which can be done easily by holding the sleep/wake button for 6 seconds.

8. If you get a lot of spam e-mail or other unwanted e-mail, pay attention to this time saving feature. Add a link to Yahoo mail in Safari bookmarks. From there you can check 'delete all' to remove all unwanted e-mails. This is much easier than deleting hundreds of spam e-mails one at a time.

Rick Santorum captured both Republican primaries in Mississippi and Alabama on Tuesday, dealing a forceful rebuke to Mitt Romney's hopes of demonstrating political strength in the South as he grinds toward his party's nomination.

The failure by Mr. Romney to emerge as a victor in the three-way battle with Mr. Santorum and Newt Gingrich was underscored by his weakness with the Republican party's traditional constituencies. Mr. Romney lost among very conservative voters and evangelical Christians, according to exit polls.

Mr. Gingrich appeared poised to come in second in both states Tuesday night, ahead of Mr. Romney but having failed to deliver any first-place victories in southern states outside of his home state of Georgia.

The immediate question for Mr. Gingrich will be whether pressure mounts for him to exit the race to allow conservatives to coalesce behind someone other than Mr. Romney.

Rick Santorum won the Alabama primary on Tuesday but remained locked in a tight race with Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in Mississippi, according to preliminary exit polls.

The Republican race moves forward to Missouri on Saturday and Illinois next week as Mr. Santorum and Mr. Romney remain locked in a bitter fight for the right to lead their party's bid to take back the White House from President Obama.

Mr. Santorum's victory in Alabama was driven by support among voters who said they were "very conservative" and from evangelical Christians, who made up nearly 8 in 10 voters, according to exit poll returns.

3. Get Rid Of Redundant MP3 and other music filesThe latest version of iTunes helps you efficiently manage your music library. You can get rid of duplicate files and free up precious hard disk space by going to Edit > Show Duplicate Songs. There's a word of caution though. iTunes detects duplicate files by checking the artist and the track name. So if you have an acoustic version of an album stored on your hard disk by the same name as the original version, iTunes will flag it as redundant.

4. Change Song Duration Display FormatTo switch between total, elapsed, and remaining time, click the time display at the top of the iTunes window.

5. Rename SongsTo rename a song, album, or CD, select its name in a list, then click the name again.

6. Stop Annoying Blank CD MessagesTo avoid the message that appears when you insert a blank CD, click the Burn button before inserting the blank CD.

7. Hot KeysIt is so much more convenient to use iTunes with the help of a couple of quick keyboard shortcuts. You don't have to take your hands off your keyboard while you're typing, just to skip to the next track. Listed below are a few handy ones. Press the keys without the (+) symbol

If you're connected to the Internet, go to Menu Bar and click on Advanced > Get CD Track name. This trick comes in handy for people who download MP3 off peer to peer networks because not all MP3s get downloaded with proper files names. It makes it very difficult to find your favorite MP3 on your PC.

9. Print CD InsertsiTunes lets you print the list of all songs in your library or a selected play list to use as CD inserts or as a list of your music library. Select your library or play list and go to File > Print.

Bribery Case Against Berlusconi Is Thrown Out

A court in Milan threw out the bribery case against the former prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, on Saturday, saying that the statute of limitations had expired, according to media reports.

Mr. Berlusconi, who had denied wrongdoing, had been accused of bribing a British tax lawyer to withhold testimony to protect him.

The Associated Press reported that Mr. Berlusconi was not in court Saturday afternoon when the court read out its verdict at the trial after about two hours of deliberation.

In the trial, which began in March 2007, Mr. Berlusconi's lawyer had argued that the statute of limitations on the crime had expired.

Prosecutors, however, said say they believed the statute of limitations on the crime will not run out until May at the earliest and they had asked that Mr. Berlusconi be sentenced to five years in prison.

Portrait Photography Tips and Tricks - Hobbies - Photography

Would you like to improve your portrait photography? Knowing how to set up your camera and lighting to take quality pictures is just one of many steps. You also have to pose your subject while helping them feel relaxed and comfortable. Having great technical skills is a good start, but personal skills will also go a long way when photographing people. Let's look at some things you'll have to consider to take good portraits.

If you're taking your portraits in a studio be sure to set up everything before your subject arrives. Making your subject wait can make them feel anxious and even annoyed. These negative feelings will show up in the photographs. Get the lighting right. Have some props. Props can be used to make your subject feel more comfortable. Many people will relax more quickly if they're given something to do with their hands. If you're using a backdrop have it in place before the person arrives. If you're shooting outside of your studio, try to familiarize yourself with the location before the shoot. Walk around the area and get ideas for pictures.

You should plan a general look and feel for the portraits before the photo shoot. When your subject arrives discuss those ideas with them and get feedback. These original ideas often change, but they're good to set you in a direction for the photography session.

Don't be afraid to give your subject directions. Most people need to be posed for photographs. Many, if left to their own devices, will appear slouchy in pictures. Having your subject lean slightly forward will help stop them from slouching. While you're taking the pictures talk to our subject about their interests. Getting to know them better will help them feel more comfortable. Eventually, they may forget about the camera all together. If someone is uncomfortable having their portrait taken it really shows up in the picture. It's important that you go out of your way to help them relax.

Be creative. Creative portraits that break the rules can be very effective. Try different camera angels. Change the lighting. Use filters. See what works best for the mood your trying to capture. Some portraits may just include the person's hands. In some portraits the face fills the whole picture. Photography is a creative art. Once you know the rules don't be afraid to break them. As you make changes, be confident without being bossy. This will help your subject trust your decisions and be more willing to follow your instructions.

Combining these skills with the technical skills you already have will help make you the most popular portrait photographer in town.

Mountain Photography: Tips and Tricks Part 1 - Hobbies - Photography

In the last couple of months, I have been receiving a lot of e-mails from photographers asking what equipment I use in the mountains and whether I have any special tips or techniques when shooting in the Himalaya. So this post covers some tips and tricks to get better photographs in the mountains.

Tip 1: Don't keep your camera in the bagMany photographers, n order to protect their equipment, keep it in a camera bag when they are out shooting. This is the wrong thing to do because invariably the moment will be gone by the time the camera is taken out of the bag! So keep the camera and one lens around your neck and keep the rest of the equipment in the bag to be used if needed. You will need to select that lens you want to use before starting out!

Tip 2: Simplify your equipmentI have seen a lot of photographers in the field with a full bag of lenses: wide angle, prime normal, zoom, telephoto etc. The problem of carrying such a lot of equipment is that you are invariably spoiled for choice and by the time you decide what to use the moment may have passed you once again! I recently did a seventeen day trek and photo assignment in the Everest region of Nepal. I carried a Nikon D90 body and a 16-85 Nikon VR lens. More than 90% of my photos were taken with this combination. In my backpack I had a Nikon D80 back up body with a 50 f 1.8 lens which was never used! And around my waist in a pouch I had a 70-300 Nikon VR lens which was used for the remaining 10% of the shooting. Having simplified the equipment I was not needed to make any choices and could concentrate on getting the photograph!

Tip 3: Shooting into the lightMountains present a lot of opportunity for back lit photography. However the biggest enemy of backlit shooting is flare. So you need to protect you lens. How? Use a lens hood - this may not always work! Remove the UV filter if you can as sometimes flare does come from the filter if it is not properly multicoated Try to shield the lens from direct sun by stepping into the shade if possible. And if this is not possible you can try as I do by using my left hand to keep the sun away from the lens. Make sure that your hand does not come in the photo! Better still if you have a friend with you ask him to shield your lens and then you can use both hands to take the photo!

Tip 4: F8 and be thereBasically this famous photography axiom asks you to be ready to shoot. So rather than adjust white balance, aperture, shutter speed , metering modes, focus modes etc before taking a photo, you to need to set all this before hand. On a normal day in the Himalaya, I will usually set the following before I start out: WB auto, ISO auto set to maximum of 800, aperture priority around 5.6 or so, matrix metering, AF-S for single focus. This allows me to shoot in most situations provide the light is reasonable. And, if I have time I would bracket three to four exposure either by using auto bracketing or manually -0.3, -0.7, -0.1, +0.3, + 0.7. This usually nails the photograph right in the camera.Tip 5: Use the light to your advantage In the mountains, the early morning light and late evening light is usually very flattering and I have to confess that I am partial to the late evening light before sun down. Sometimes you need to wait for the right light. A lot of mountain landscapes are made due to the patience of the photographer. It also helps to know how the subject will look at a certain time of day. For example, certain monasteries in Ladakh get the western sun and so look best in the evening. Similarly, the Sandakphu view near Darjeeling has an amazing amount of warmth and texture when seen in the evening light.

Tip 6: Don't put away your camera in bad weatherMountain weather is unpredictable. There may be bright sunshine in the morning and snow and sleet in the afternoon. Sometimes great photos are taken in inclement weather. If you are shooting in the rain or snow try to protect your camera by covering it with a cloth or a temporary plastic cover. When I am walking and it is raining or snowing I keep my camera over my shoulder inside my jacket so that I can take it out and shoot as needed. When you get back to camp, remove the plastic, wipe the camera and lens clean with a dry cloth and leave in the open for it to breathe and the moisture to dry out.

Tip 7: BatteriesBatteries are a major problem in the Himalaya. Ideally you need to carry two batteries with you as often on long treks you do not have access to electricity to charge batteries. At night it often helps to take the batteries out of the camera and put it into a warm jacket or sleeping bag. And on the subject of batteries and extending battery life, stop looking at the LCD after every shot! In the Himalaya to save batteries my LCD is disabled and comes on only when I press the button. Also avoid scrolling through all the photos at camp every night as this drains the battery as well!

Tip 8: If you can, take along a small table top light weight tripodIdeally most photographers would recommend a full heavy weight tripod but I have given this up in the Himalaya a long time ago! It is too heavy to carry and also in some situations difficult to set up. So I have a small Slik table top which can also fit into a jacket pocket which I use when I need support. The Joby Gorilla pod is also an option and has the advantage of flexible legs!

Tip 9: Finally, don't get mesmerized by the mountain ranges look for detail near you as wellOften in a mountain environment, we tend to get mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the mountain ranges and shoot them as much as we can: at sunrise, at sunset, during the day. However, very often there is a lot of interesting details in the rocks, flowers, plants etc in the terrain through which we walk. Very often it is possible to combine this in a wide angle view to create a spectacular shot which is out of the ordinary. So don't put the mountain in the top of the frame every time and shoot!

States Reach $25 Billion Deal With Banks Over Foreclosure Abuses

More than two million American homeowners will get at least $25 billion in relief from the nation's biggest banks as part of a broad settlement to be announced as early as Thursday with state and federal authorities. It is the latest effort by the government to halt the housing market's downward slide.

Despite the billions earmarked in the accord, the aid will help only a relatively small portion of the millions of borrowers who are delinquent and still facing foreclosure. The success could depend in part on how effectively the program is implemented, because earlier attempts by Washington to help troubled borrowers aided far fewer than had been expected.

Still, the agreement marks the broadest effort yet to help borrowers who owe more than their houses are worth, with roughly 1 million to see their mortgage debt reduced by banks. In addition, 300,000 homeowners are to be able to refinance at lower rates, while another 750,000 people who lost their homes to foreclosure between September 2008 and the end of 2011 will receive checks for about $2,000.

Brokered by officials in Washington, the final details of the pact were being negotiated until the last possible minute, including how many states would participate and when the formal announcement would be made in Washington. The two biggest holdouts, California and New York, now plan to sign on, according to officials familiar with the negotiations.

4 Simple and Effective Digital Photography Tips and Tricks - Hobbies - Photography

You just purchased a brand new, state-of-the-art digital camera, charged the battery, fiddled with a few buttons and started snapping away. But hold your horses, your photos aren't turning out to be the artistic impressions you've been dreaming of...

Let me talk you through four top tips for taking more interesting and memorable pictures...

Tip 1: Make your Pictures UniqueIf you're photographing a popular subject that's been snapped a thousand times before, try a different angle. When shooting a landscape, don't just point and shoot - lie on the ground and shoot from there to give a worm's eye view or climb up high for a bird's eye view.

In this example, /Day/63 the photographer shoots straight up the middle of the runner bean poles. Isn't that more interesting than shooting head-on?

Get in closer and pick out details - in short, get creative with your angles!

Tip 2: Experiment with Various Exposure SettingsBy exploring the different exposure settings of your camera, make pictures look more brilliant with 0.5 to 2 stops underexposure in bright surroundings, other scenes will benefit from more clarity with some overexposure.

Simple exposure level tuning can express different moods in your pictures.

To get a really good grasp of various exposure levels, take several pictures of the same scene with different exposure levels and study your results.

Tip 3: BlurBy intentionally and creatively introducing blur to a photograph, you can bring extra clarity to important features. This can be done in two basic ways:-1. Depth-of-Field Blur - This is achieved by varying the lens aperture between 0.4 and 1.4, creating a lovely, soft background blur and bringing the foreground subject sharply into focus.

This example /Day/71 keenly focuses on the insect and the flower it sits on, while giving only vague impressions of background aspects.

2. Movement Blur - By setting the camera exposure to shutter priority and keeping it slow, capture interesting streaks as the subject moves in front of the camera.

Tip 4: Create Something Out of NothingAs an exercise, this encourages you to take a step back and rethink how you can create stunning pictures out of everyday objects.

Here's an example of a shot taken for a kitchen assignment /Day/75 Getting close up to an everyday item makes these peppercorns infinitely more interesting.

Take a fresh look at common elements around you, such as lines, space and patterns - roads, bridges, trees, railings, etc.

Can you see the creative possibilities growing before your eyes?!

Photography Tips

A lot of people would find a digital camera an affordable and useful gadget nowadays. With the new models coming in every now and then and the price getting lower, people can now afford to buy one. Don't you want to take your photos to the next level and amaze your friends and loved ones on how you did it. Well I read a couple of books and would share some tips on how to take better photos.

Take it off center

The usual photos of people that we take always places the subject in the middle of the picture. This is one thing that you should avoid doing. Why don't you place them a little to the right or left and see how it makes a dramatic change to the boring picture. You may also do this with sunsets or when taking pictures of the ocean. Place the horizon off center. Emphasize the sky more or the water more. This wy it does not look like any other photo that you have seen.

Find other angles

Don't be afraid to move. Look for other interesting angles that will emphasize your subject more. Shoot from above or below and you'll notice that your photos will look even better.

Frame your shots

When you're shooting the ever so normal sunset, you may want to place something to frame it to make it different. Example of this is an arching tree or a row of huts. You may also place people in the scene to make it more interesting and to make it different and unique.

I have found a really neat eBook that you may want to check out to learn more about Photography tips and tricks. I have found this book very useful in taking my hobby into the next level. Digital Photography Secrets is the title of the eBook and aimed at beginners who would want to further enhance their skills in Photography.

Looking for some digital photography tips and tricks? In this series I present some practical tips to you that help get the most out of your digital camera. Taking outside pictures can be exhilarating. You can make beautiful pictures of some landscapes, a setting sun or dark clouds. When those dark clouds start providing us with rain, it becomes a little more challenging. You can still take beautiful pictures, but you will need to keep your camera dry.

Keeping the camera dry becomes very difficult when the weather is not good. Whether you are an amateur or professional photographer the following tips will help you keep your camera dry. So, if you love to take photos of the natural world in bad weather, follow the below advice.

Digital Photography Tip #1: Lens Hoods & Filters

When you are taking photos while it is raining, it is important to keep the rain off the lens to avoid poor image quality. What you really need under these circumstances is a UV lens filter. It will protect your lens while a lens hood will help to shield the front end from falling rain. The UV filters are great. You can simply screw them onto the end of your lens and it will allow you to wipe the front end often, without the risk of damaging the expensive lens. These types of filters are pretty cheap and if they become damaged, you can simply throw them away.

Digital Photography Tip #2: Carry a Lens Cloth

In order to wipe the rain you can carry a micro fibber lens cloth. The chamois leather is also absorbent and ideal for mopping up raindrops on cameras and lens barrels. The advantage of using lens clothes is that you can use them without scratching the lens or filter. You should also carry a second cloth to keep your hands dry or wipe away any dirt.

Digital Photography Tip #3: Use An Umbrella

If you go to cover a match or the similar events, you can carry a large golf umbrella. The golf umbrellas are ideal for keeping you and your camera dry and out of the rain. They also prove useful for shielding your cameras from strong winds and help to prevent camera shake. One disadvantage of it is that you will need at least one free hand to hold the umbrella. Unless, of course, you bring your tripod.

Digital Photography Tip #4: Change Your Lens Under Cover

You must be careful enough so that rain does not enter your digital camera. To prevent the rain getting on your sensor you should always change lenses under cover. This will prevent any rain, dust etc to enter your camera. Either get out of the rain completely, or use some kind of improvised shelter. You must be so careful when opening your camera to change lenses outdoors, it is not worth the risk.

Rain can be very, very damaging to your digital camera. But some of the above digital photography tips and tricks should make sure you are prepared. You shouldn't avoid going out when it is cloudy. After all, you can often get great shots just before 'hell breaks loose'. But make sure you know what you need to do if the weather turns out to be nastier than expected.

Going through the information you will learn how to transform your trip photography into an elegant and artistic presentation of your memories.

Digital Photography Tips and Tricks #1: Think of a Short Story

Whether you will be on vacation with your family or friends, whether it is a city-trip or a beach holiday, you should think of your photography as a sort of a story. Your vacation story that has a beginning, a middle and an end. Keeping this in mind will help you think chronologically and your photos will reflect this chronology.

Digital Photography Tips and Tricks #2: Think of the People

One of my friends returned from his vacation last week and back home he discovered that he did not get a single photo with his wife. It so happens. Back home you will want to remember your participation in the journey as more than an invisible observer. Try to bring several different cameras on your trip away. A simple camera is enough to take photos. But if you have a D-SLR camera, you would be able to shoot quick and candid photos. With such a camera, you can capture every fleeting moment. So, if you bring different types of cameras, you can capture more artful shots, and you'll have greater control over the presentation of the most scenic points of our trip. Thus, for more varied & interesting photographs, use different cameras.

Digital Photography Tips and Tricks #4: Look for Symbolic Objects

A photographer always remains alert about what happens around him. So, look for the objects that have strong symbolic value to evoke the feelings of your trip. A shot of a sandal half-buried in the sand at the beach, for example, can have a more powerful narrative function than a panoramic view of the ocean. Thus, look for ways to present your surroundings and subjects in subtle, more interesting ways.

These are just some simple tips and tricks, and they may seem too simple to be effective. I guess that's part of the secret to it. They are so obvious that people do not keep them in mind.

But apply these digital photography tips and tricks consciously on your next vacation and you will see that magic can happen. With a bit of chronology and use of symbolism, even if it needs to be orchestrated, will lift your vacation photography up to that next level.

Shot in the right and chronological way, the pictures will tell your story for you, people will be amazed by what you can accomplish and you won't put your viewers to sleep while narrating the slide show of your latest vacation, either!

Russia and China on Saturday vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution on Saturday condemning the Syrian government's crackdown on protests for the second time. At the meeting in Manhattan, 13 countries voted for the resolution proposed by European and Arab nations that gave strong support to an Arab League plan to end the crackdown and call for President Bashar al-Assad to step aside.
