You have probably had a lot of advice or have read a lot of information on how to go about designing your web site. The opinions are many and varied so how do you decide what the best approach is?
Think of it this way. When you go on the Internet to find something or to buy a particular item, you do not want to spend the rest of the day just trying to navigate a web site for the item you want. You want to be able to find what you want, click on the buy button and be on your way.
So forget about all the fancy videos and flash and the moving little information or advertising boxes that go up and down on your screen annoying the heck out of you. Keep it nice and simple and very user friendly. That is what will keep people on your web site when they come looking to buy something from you.
Basic Design
You can save yourself a lot of time, effort and money by choosing a web hosting service provider that has a wide variety of web site templates for you to choose from. This way you do not need to do or pay for any programming.
Then all you need to do is add your company logo and design the rest of the pages with your content.
While designing all the pages of your site, keep the customer in mind by creating easy to understand web copy and easy to see and use links that will direct them exactly where they want to go.
Home Page
A common mistake people make is to try and put to much stuff on the home page. You do not want to make your home page look like a cluttered closet.
Use only 6 -8 tabs on your top margin and the rest of your tabs on the left-hand margin. If your site has numerous pages include a site map as well so your customers can go to specific areas of your web site.
Each page should all have the same tags so your customers can just click on a tab to get back to the home page with out having to keep using the back button.
Distribute your ads among all the pages not just the home page. Too many ads on the home page gives it a cluttered look.
Other Pages
Streamline all your other pages. Each page should perform a certain function. You wouldn't want to put all the categories of - about us, contact us, feedback and customer service all on one page. Use one category, one page, and one particular function.
Make sure that your order page is easy to use and that you have the ability to take a variety of payments.
Keep your Blog current and up to date. When people come and visit your Blog and see that it hasn't been updated in a couple of months, this will give them the impression that your web site is not up to date as well.
By keeping a clean, smooth and easy to use web site will result in return customers and over all growth of your web site.
